ProQuest Smart Search received the award for "Best Specialist Search Product" at the International Information Industry Awards ceremony held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on November 30, 2005.
|
The award is presented annually to 'the most innovative product that best helps a user through |
the search experience' and attracts nominations from information specialists across the globe. Prior winners were Google and Fast ESP.
"We are proud to be recognized for the prestigious 'Best Specialist Search Product' for ProQuest Smart Search", says Suzanne BeDell, Vice President of Publishing. "This technology has been embraced by all levels of users, from novices to those familiar with constructing Boolean queries. We are very pleased with how Smart Search works for and with the user to provide better results, rather than just more results."
Originally released in late 2004, ProQuest Smart Search has been refined and developed throughout 2005. Globally, usage statistics have increase search success and accuracy by more than 20% (as measured by ProQuest through extensive user testing).
ProQuest Smart Search taps into ProQuest's powerful indexing to supercharge results, analyzing a user's search, and then offering suggestions for related topics and publications at the top of the results screen. It uses a variety of techniques to map a user's search terms to relevant items in ProQuest's controlled vocabulary. These techniques analyze index term occurrence patterns, as well as comparing a user's current search against previously run searches.
Since its launch, ProQuest Smart Search has attracted significant interest from the library and information sector worldwide. Soon after it was launched ProQuest Smart Search was rated a perfect five stars for "Searchability" in the The Charleston Advisor, by reviewer David Bickford, University Librarian at the University of Phoenix. |

Linking & Open Access for Business, Med Users |
|
|
Good news for business users! Our latest linking innovation is the “expressway to the best,” linking the world's foremost business indexing to the top business monographs. Now, if your institution subscribes to both ABI/INFORM and Safari Business Books Online, users can move straight from citation to full text, right down to the chapter level.
Links can be enabled with no extra effort on the library's part. When users click on a link, the Safari chapter appears in a separate browser window, within the powerful Safari interface. There users can take full advantage of its many capabilities.
We're currently loading metadata from Safari Business Books Online into ABI/INFORM for seamless linking. The initial release provides ABI/INFORM-quality indexing for over 250 Safari business books. The content base will grow steadily to ultimately accommodate some 1,000 books.
We're making similar innovations in the healthcare information area. Our ProQuest medical databases are keeping pace with the ever-growing presence of open-access publishing. We've just enhanced our medical offerings with links to the full text of the open-access journals published by BIOMED Central on the Internet.
National Library of Medicine standard indexing is available for BIOMED Central's open-access journals, while links to the open-access articles are now included-and enabled-in ProQuest Health & Medical Complete, ProQuest Biology Journals, and ProQuest Medical Library. |

ProQuest has developed an XML gateway server to expand support for interoperability of ProQuest databases in your library's e-resource environment. As an alternative to the current Z39.50 interface, the XML gateway will enable better search and retrieval functionality for federated searching of ProQuest databases. The ProQuest XML Gateway design draws from the SRW/U model in keeping with NISO's Metasearch Initiative. For more information, go here. |
